The 24 game: a reliable method to find the calculation

Work backwards from the target

Randomly trying every operation creates too many branches. Start from the factor pairs of 24: 6 × 4, 8 × 3, 12 × 2 or 24 × 1. Then ask whether the four supplied numbers can create one of those pairs.

Create useful intermediate values

Small differences matter. Eight minus five makes 3; nine minus three makes 6. An exact division can make 2, 3 or 4, all useful factors of 24. Another family of solutions creates 25 and removes 1, or creates 23 and adds 1.

Ask three questions in order

1. Can I create two factors of 24?
2. Can three numbers make 24 while the last one becomes a neutral × 1?
3. Can I get close to 24 and correct the gap with addition or subtraction?

Write parentheses from the beginning. They expose the operation order and prevent a number from being used twice accidentally.
