Mystery word: how to choose genuinely useful guesses

A guess should produce information
In a mystery-word game, a valid word is not automatically a useful guess. Early guesses should test several frequent letters in different positions. A word with five distinct letters usually reveals more than one containing two pairs.
Choose a balanced opener
Combine two or three vowels with frequent consonants such as R, S, T, L or N. Avoid repeated letters until the clues suggest one. The first two rounds will then cover a much larger portion of the alphabet.
Turn feedback into constraints
After each attempt, organise the information:
- keep a correctly placed letter fixed;
- move a present but misplaced letter;
- exclude an absent letter from later guesses;
- when a letter repeats, distinguish presence from the exact number of occurrences.
A common trap is finding a plausible ending too early and trying several nearly identical words. Preserve at least one position for testing unknown letters.
Use the game and solver together
Play the French mystery-word game and count how many genuinely new letters each guess tests. If several candidates remain, enter the pattern and known letters into the French Wordle Finder. It is a useful check that every clue has become a precise constraint.
A strong guess is not merely close to the answer: it removes many competing answers.
